GPT Is a Great Assistant. A Terrible Decision-Maker.

This is how GPT answers when you ask GPT which candidate to hire.

You need to make an offer by tomorrow morning.

So you do what any rational founder does in 2026. You open GPT, paste in the resumes, describe your company, your sales process, your market and ask.

The response comes back in seconds. Clean paragraphs. Bullet points. A recommendation. It sounds confident. It sounds informed. It even uses words like “strategic fit” and “growth trajectory.”

You feel relief.

Why does this happen?

GPT is fast. In 30 seconds, it gives you a structured analysis that would take you 30 minutes to think through yourself. It organizes your scattered thoughts. It puts language to the vague unease you’ve been feeling about.

It feels like having a consultant in your pocket. Except this consultant doesn’t bill ₹5 lakhs for a hiring advisory project. It’s free. It’s instant, and it doesn’t judge you for asking the same question seventeen different ways at midnight.

Does it give you clarity? Yes.

Because you’re exhausted. You’ve been in back-to-back meetings for 9 hours. Your burn rate is on your mind, and you’re terrified of repeating that mistake.

And this tool takes your chaos and hands you back order.

“Based on the information provided, Candidate B appears to be the stronger fit for your organization’s current growth stage and sales complexity.”

That phrase “based on the information provided” should give you pause.

But it doesn’t. Because someone (something) just validated your decision. You can finally go to bed.

At some point in that conversation, GPT stopped being your assistant and became your decision-maker.

The moment was subtle: You went from “Help me think through this” to “Tell me what to do.” From “What should I consider?” to “Which one should I hire?” From asking questions to seeking permission.

And GPT blesses its algorithmic heart and gives you an answer. Because that’s what it does. It scans billions of sentences, finds patterns and generates the most likely words to answer you. It’s a master of predicting what should come next in a sentence.

But what just happened: GPT analyzed exactly zero candidates in your actual market. It has closed exactly zero deals at your price point. It has built exactly zero sales teams in companies that look like yours. It has never met these candidates. It doesn’t know if Candidate B’s “strategic communication skills” will hold up when your CTO grills them on revenue forecasting and pipeline management.

It gave you a statistically plausible answer to a question it doesn’t understand.

And the scariest part is, It sounded exactly as confident about that answer as it does when you ask it “What’s 2+2?”

Why GPT Is a Terrible Decision-Maker?

Is this a technology problem?

Is GPT broken? Is AI not ready? Do we just need GPT-5 or whatever comes next? No. The technology is doing exactly what it’s designed to do: Generate plausible text based on patterns.

This is a decision and accountability problem.

You’re using a text prediction engine to make a decision that will materially impact your company’s revenue. That’s not a technology failure. That’s a category error. You wouldn’t use a calculator to write a novel. You wouldn’t use a spellchecker to build a financial model.

You have a conversation with a chatbot.

Not a decision framework.

And when that decision proves to be wrong six months later, when you’re sitting in a board meeting explaining why you’re behind on revenue targets, you won’t say “GPT told us to hire them.”

You’ll say: “I thought they were the right fit.”
